Dream Big

about

ABOUT THE SONG:
This was the first song I wrote after leaving season one of The Voice back in 2011. I called up my ol' pal Bleu (Jonas Brothers, Big Freedia, Demi Lovato) and headed over to his apartment in Santa Monica for a writing session the weekend after the season finale. Upon arrival Bleu told me he had dreamt most of the chorus the night before and that he immediately began working on it when he woke up. We wanted to write a song that told my story of growing up as a queer brown kid in Alabama, moving away to begin my music career, and landing on The Voice stage in front of 14 million people every week. We also wanted to give a nod to my attraction to bigger body types and the importance of body positivity. The demo Bleu produced was absolute fire and I was ready to have him finish it up but a disagreement with one of my managers at the time caused the track to get shelved while another version of the song, more rooted in blues ended up being released. Fast forward to 2021. The Voice is celebrating 10 years on the air. As I was digging through audio and video files to share with fans I found the original demo again and knew I had to ask Bleu to finish the track and give it a proper release.

ABOUT THE VIDEO:
There were many concepts discussed for the video, but the one Joshua R. Pangborn and I kept coming back to was me portraying a photographer, running a photo shoot where moments from this song were depicted by actors in dramatic recreations. Catalin Stelian did an amazing job capturing the entire thing on camera and editing the video, and I am so proud to share it with the world.

SONG LYRICS:
Alabama, so hot in the summertime
It's so easy, to drown in the Crimson Tide
Momma told me there's more to life than this
She gave me a penny and said "boy don'tcha waste your wish
I want my baby boy to have, the things I never did,

Dream Big, it doesn't cost a dime
To build the rooms of your castle in the sky
The human heart, has no limits to it's size
So go on, dream big tonight."

Packed the hatchback with everything I owned
When I got to Chicago, I couldn't even pay the toll
Working two jobs, barely had time to sleep
No you can't get started, when you can't even make ends meet
And when I closed my eyes, all I could do is sing

Dream Big, it doesn't cost a dime
To build the rooms of your castle in the sky
The human heart, has no limits to it's size
So go on, dream big tonight

Now as I stand up here on this stage, singing my song for you
I think of the words that momma said, "if you don't dream it won't come true."
And when the lights come up, I close my eyes and sing,

Dream Big, it doesn't cost a dime
To build the rooms of your castle in the sky
The human heart, has no limits to it's size
So go on, dream big tonight

Dream big tonight
Dream big tonight
